Hi guys! Usually, I am not really into progressive / alternative rock. I don’t even have a suitable playlist to add this song. But today’s band and song just touched my heart pretty much. Just in case, the song is far from a “heartbreaking” ballad or something…not, it sounds pretty dark and even a bit anxious (at least the harmony and the overall mood). Anyway, here is Digital Carbs — alternative / progressive rock band from Munich, Germany, and the song “Mr. Five”. Let’s check it!
I used to listen to a lot of similar music in the past. I had a huge musical archive (collection) on HDD. This track definitely pulled me into the memories and nostalgic feelings. Even the style and aesthetics of the artwork of the song perfectly resonate with my inner vibes. I don’t want to offend musicians with my associations…but for those people, who like this stuff and want to deeply dive into the genre, I will give a few bands that may be similar in some aspects: Dredg, Porcupine Tree, Amplifier, Radiohead, I Am Giant. I can clearly hear some influences of these bands in this track (excuse me if I am mistaken).
I don’t know if it’s a professional deformation of my brain, but the time signature 5/4 in this track sounds incredibly smooth. I didn’t even notice it from the first listening 🙂 But honestly, it’s a huge work to make 5/4 become so “friendly” to the ears. The arrangement is also wonderful. It starts with slightly dissonant clean guitars, then the vocal part comes in (time and singing manner are also great and atmospheric), and the song slowly builds up until the dark bridge section, and, finally blows with angry distorted guitars as an apogee. What can I say…very strong work. As from the musical, as from the production perspective. My respect.
A bit more info about the track:
Mr. Five is a song about our past selves. A person we once were, that we have since wanted to leave behind. But that we still carry with us at all times. The disorienting groove coupled with the dreamy guitar sounds leaves the listener in an almost meditative state. Mr. Five is the second single of our upcoming EP.
